History of the Crows

TOP CROWS HONOURED AT 10-YEAR MILESTONE

By ANDREW MATHIESON

LEETON-Whitton will celebrate its 10 years as a club by announcing their team of the decade at the end of the season.
The occasion will coincide with this year’s presentation night to be held on October 15.
Team of the decade organiser Cheryl Whymark said the concept was first talked about 12 months ago, but only in the last few weeks has it come to fruition.
She was hopeful naming future teams of the decade would become a club tradition.
The Crows were initially formed in 1995 after a merger between former rival clubs, the Leeton Redlegs and the Whitton Tigers.
"It’s something that should be followed on in years to come with a little bit of history," Whymark said.
"This club has to start with its history somewhere, so 10 years is a good time to start it."
The selectors, who have all been involved since the inaugural year, will reveal a shortlist of the best players in their preferred positions in the coming weeks.
The selection committee met on Wednesday night to determine the criteria for players’ eligibility into the team.
Key elements will focus on completing one full season, player performances at first grade level, personal accolades, including representative honours, club awards and their contribution to the club, and team-based performances especially during finals, while individual character will also be considered.
The criteria would rule out former Essendon player Danny Morgan, who many believe has been the Crows’ greatest player during the past decade, based on his eight games in 2001 before departing mid-season for employment reasons.
"Danny would walk into most sides, but if there is a criteria where you have to play at least a season, he won’t (make it)," Whymark said.
Current players, including coach Jamie Broadbent, Travis Doyle, Matt Sharman and Daryl Clayton would also be strong contenders for places in the Crows’ best-ever team.
